The Whalers Cottage
"Minke", the Whalers Cottage at Hyams Beach is a charming and romantic retreat for couples. It has an ideal location, old world ambience, luxurious modern furnishings and exceptional appointments including:
- TV Video/DVD; stereo
- classic selection of books and indoor and games (including miniature boules)
- romantic bedroom with fine linen and Bay views
- modern fully-equipped, glass-fronted, eat-in kitchen with oven, microwave, dishwasher, full-sized fridge and quality cutlery and crockery
- large marble-floored bathroom, with bath, towels provided
- laundry with washer and dryer
- private, sundrenched sundeck with a teak table and chairs and an enormous market umbrella
- landscaped lawn with barbecue facilities
Though we regret that the cottage is not generally suitable for children under 12 years or pets, we do occasionally take babies if you can provide their sleeping equipment, and we have been known to welcome the odd, tiny, well-behaved dog (some conditions apply).
The History of the Cottage
In 1911, Mr Francis Langridge came to Hyams Beach after walking from Melbourne in search of work. He found employment as a foreman carpenter at HMAS Creswell. He built Minke, the family's first home, in 1926 - Bayview (the blue cottage next door) and the cabins that now form the Seaside Cottages, followed. Francis Langridge's grandson still lives in the village, which is named for Michael Hyam, about whom you can read in the "History of Hyams Beach and District", a copy of which you'll find in Minke's sitting room. There are some early photographs in the cottage too.
